Borouge Petrochemical Company announced yesterday its award of engineering, procurement and construction contracts for the world-class fourth expansion project (Borouge 4) in its industrial complex in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, at a cost of 22 billion dirhams.

The company indicated in a statement that earlier, "ADNOC" and "Borealis" signed the final investment agreement to expand the Borouge complex to produce polyolefins through the "Borouge 4" plant.

This bid reflects Borouge's pioneering role in discovering important opportunities in the field of polyolefins manufacturing, supporting industrial growth, and enhancing the value inherent in every barrel of crude oil produced in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

In addition, the facility will contribute to enabling the next phase of growth in the Ruwais Industrial Complex, by providing raw materials for the "Tazez" industrial chemicals area.

As part of the processes and procedures that were carried out to reach the stage of awarding engineering, procurement and construction contracts, Borouge has completed the initial engineering designs to move forward with the completion of the project.

The scope of contracts for the “Borouge 4” project includes all engineering, procurement, construction and initial operation of all production facilities in the new complex, which are necessary to reach the full production capacity of the two new “polyethylene” plants, which will amount to 700,000 tons per year for each plant. These plants will be supplied with manufacturing materials by a world-class ethane cracker, which has a production capacity of more than 1.5 million tons per year of ethylene.

Increase production capacity

The Borouge 4 project is set to increase the company's annual polyolefin production capacity to 6.4 million tons, which represents a 14-fold increase in production capacity since the first production of Borouge in 2001.

Borouge's value-added materials are used to manufacture a variety of products, including industrial tubes, cables, foil and personal protective equipment.
