The Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Elysées, the “moments of grace” in line 13… The charms of Paris come at a price.

Often exorbitant, the cost of living in the capital is no longer the highest in the world according to the annual study by

The Economist

, published on Wednesday.

First in the standings in 2020, tied with Zurich and Hong Kong, Paris has lost its place in favor of the city of Tel Aviv.

Ranked 5th last year, the Israeli city "benefits" from the fastest price increase recorded in five years (+ 3.5%).

Damascus always in the last position

The Economist

says supply chain issues have driven prices up in many cities around the world.

They are on top of transportation costs which have soared along with the prices of gasoline, tobacco and entertainment.

“The World Cost of Living Index” published by the British weekly ranks 173 cities according to price according to a basket of more than 200 products and services.

Despite high inflation, Damascus remains the cheapest city in this ranking, especially due to the fall of the Syrian pound against the dollar.
