Dubai Industrial City announced yesterday an agreement with the Chinese "Wenchao" Group to build a world-class facility for the manufacture and distribution of foodstuffs in the business district, with investments amounting to more than 735 million dirhams.

The agreement comes in the context of Dubai Industrial City's efforts to enhance food security in the country and support various government strategies and initiatives, foremost of which is the "300 billion project."

A statement stated that the new agreement was signed on the sidelines of the World Industrial and Manufacturing Summit 2021, which will be held at Expo 2020 Dubai, noting that it is planned to start construction work for the first phase of the huge facility, which has an area of ​​more than 950,000 square feet, during first half of 2022.

The facility was designed in a manner that adopts the latest production and storage technologies, and an expected food production value of up to 500 million dirhams annually.

"We welcome the Wenchao Group to Dubai Industrial City, as their new facility will constitute a qualitative addition to the business environment in the city, and in the UAE as a whole," said Saud Abu Al-Shawareb, Director-General of Dubai Industrial City. He added, "The new world-class logistics and food production facility in Dubai Industrial City will position us in a strong hub for efficient manufacturing, storage and distribution of food, while contributing to the support and development of the local economy."

The Chinese Wenchao Group has owned the Wenchao Green Farm in Nizwa, Dubai, since 2012, where nearly 50 types of vegetables are grown on an area of ​​80,000 square feet, relying on environmentally friendly agricultural methods, sustainable solutions, and the replacement of chemical pesticides. Or fertilize with compost, and remove weeds manually.

The company aims to move towards vertical farming in 2023 by utilizing advanced agricultural technologies, to overcome the challenges posed by the natural desert environment.

The second growth phase will see the construction of the four million square feet vertical farm, due for completion in 2025.
