• Emmanuel Macron announced in Béziers an additional extension of 1.9 billion euros for the development of the green hydrogen sector in France.

  • Development of production and distribution capacities for green hydrogen, research, training, industrial subsidies and assistance in the conversion of transport vehicles: the plan for the Occitanie region is ambitious.

  • By 2030, the region hopes to have developed 40,000 jobs throughout its territory.

Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday in Béziers funding for 1.9 billion euros for projects related to green hydrogen, in addition to the 7.2 billion already planned as part of the France relaunch program.

Its arrival on the Genvia site, a company financed in part by the Occitanie region (up to 3.5 million euros, or 6.5% of its capital) and this announcement reinforce the community's policy.

Since 2019, Occitanie has embarked on the development of this energy produced from renewable energies.

"We were the first French region to adopt a global strategy and an operational plan," recalls the president, Carole Delga.

The € 150 million plan provides for the creation of factories, production and distribution stations for this energy by 2030.

Produced with the help of marine wind turbines

In Port-la-Nouvelle, where the port extension works are in full swing, the hydrogen production plant alone must produce 21% of the production targets for this energy.

The plant will benefit from the renewable energy produced by the offshore wind farm.

At the same time, it is cofinancing the techno-campus of Francazal (in Haute-Garonne), a research unit announced for 2024. Intended to be the largest European center for research, testing and technological innovation dedicated to hydrogen green, its primary ambition is to develop the future hydrogen engine for aircraft.

The target: industry and means of transport

This vast plan also envisages the purchase of vehicles running on hydrogen, including TER trains, tested during the reopening of the Toulouse - Luchon line. And support for financing vehicles for transport companies. “Heavy mobility is today one of the biggest challenges of the energy transition,” continues the president of the region. With the Corridor H2 project, the Region is embarking on this path and associating industry and mobility on a European scale. "

This project - supported by Europe - provides grants for companies in the transport sector wishing to initiate a change from their vehicles running on diesel to hydrogen vehicles.

It should also make it possible to provide carriers with several distribution sites, along the A9 motorway in particular, in order to meet the needs of transit carriers.

40,000 jobs hoped for in the region by 2030

"The energy transition generates jobs," said the president of the Occitanie region.

According to its projections, the sector should create 40,000 jobs by 2030 and three times more by 2050. At the same time, the Elysée envisages by 2030 the creation of 50 to 100,000 jobs throughout France. .
