China News Service, Beijing, November 16 (Reporter Ruan Yulin) Jin Qinxian, deputy secretary-general of Tsinghua University and dean of Beijing Tsinghua Industrial Development Research Institute, said that hydrogen energy will improve China’s energy System security and achieving carbon neutrality have extremely high strategic value.

In the industrial field, hydrogen energy will play a major role in the substitution of raw materials and heat sources.

Jin Qinxian said that China has the world's fastest-growing energy and environmental protection needs, and has huge and unique market advantages.

Hydrogen energy has extremely high strategic value for China to improve energy system security and achieve carbon neutrality.

In the industrial field, hydrogen energy will play a major role in the substitution of raw materials and heat sources, and in the energy field, distributed power systems, energy storage, etc. will play an important role.

"The demand for green hydrogen has promoted a huge increase in the demand for renewable energy," Jin Qinxian said. It is estimated that China's CO2 emissions will be reduced to 5.8 billion tons in 2050, a relative peak reduction of 7.7 billion tons, of which hydrogen energy applications will reduce emissions by 870 million tons. To achieve carbon neutrality in 2060, it is estimated that carbon emissions will be reduced by another 3 billion tons, of which 300 million tons of hydrogen energy application emissions will be reduced, accounting for more than 10% of the total reduction.

"If all renewable energy is used to produce hydrogen from water electrolysis, it will require about 350 trillion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy, which is 180 times the 1.9 trillion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy in 2018," Jin Qinxian said.

The application of hydrogen energy to steel production is an effective way to transform and upgrade the steel industry to a low-carbon and green industry.

Jin Qinxian said that more than 90% of China's steel industry's production capacity is long-process steel produced with blast furnace technology, and carbon emissions account for about 15% of the country's total annual carbon dioxide emissions.

It is estimated that in 2050, the short-process steel of scrap recycling will account for 60% of China's total steel output, of which direct reduced iron is an important component of short-process steel.

The combination of scrap steel recycling and hydrogen direct reduction iron technology will build a complete zero-carbon emission metallurgical industry and provide zero-carbon emission green steel for green industries such as new energy.

"Green electricity generated from renewable energy is an important support for the zero-carbon transformation of the metallurgical industry." Jin Qinxian emphasized that direct reduction ironmaking does not have sintering, coke ovens and blast furnaces, and the products have low phosphorus and sulfur content and fewer five-hazard impurities. , Clean, raw materials capable of producing high-purity and high-quality steel. It is an indispensable supporting technology for short-process electric furnace steel. It can form a complete metallurgical industry chain together with upstream high-carbon ferrochrome and downstream ferritic stainless steel.

Jin Qinxian said that China will uphold the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, and is willing to assume international responsibilities commensurate with China's development level, increase national independent contributions, adopt more powerful policies and measures, and strive to reach the peak of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030. Achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, and make greater efforts and contributions to achieve the goals set by the Paris Agreement to address climate change.
