• They do not declare themselves to be family caregivers, for fear of being stigmatized at work.

However, they would be 11 million in France.

  • 45% of caregivers have adjusted their schedules and 40% are part-time in order to better support their loved ones.

  • The status of family caregiver or informal caregiver gives rights.

Several mechanisms exist: caregiver leave, the donation of days off or RTT between colleagues, psychological support platforms or even support groups.

In the absence of an official census, family caregivers would be 11 million, 62% of whom are active. One in five private sector employees would therefore be in this situation to support a parent, a child, a spouse, etc. on a daily basis, sick, disabled, aging, victim of an accident.

To be on all fronts, 45% have adjusted their schedules and 40% are part-time according to the Tilia “Help and work 2020” barometer. 71% are afraid of being stigmatized at work and being seen as “balls you cannot count on”. So, they are silent and do not declare themselves a caregiver, although this status grants them rights. First of all, access to caregiver leave. Days off compensated by CAF (between 43 and 52 euros per day) allow them to be absent. To date, out of 15,900 requests, CAF has only accepted 5,000.

“He is little mobilized because very limited. Between three months and one year maximum over a whole career. Very little in the end. And then, the person being helped must have a certain degree of dependency for his caregiver to be eligible. It is a first step but it is not enough ”, underlines Christine Lamidel, founder and general manager of Tilia. The donation of days off, RTT, recovery from colleagues to another employee-parent of a seriously ill child or a caregiver is also possible within a company.

To encourage this device, employers even supplement this capital with additional days. At BNP Paribas Personal Finance, tuition bonuses and higher education grants for the children of helping employees are even increased. Support groups with former caregivers or employed caregivers in post are also set up in order to promote the exchange of good practices. To relieve the mental burden of their helping employees, employers give them access to psychological support platforms and / or facilitating services.

When an illness, an accident ... occurs in a home, caregivers must quickly find a physiotherapist, a meal service, etc., to take care of the vulnerable person.

All while still working most of the time.

Service providers commissioned by employers can take charge of identifying and making appointments with professionals in place of the caregiver.

“The average age of a caregiver is now 49 and keeps getting younger.

Companies are taking up the subject because it affects all hierarchical levels, including talents in key positions, ”notes Christine Lamidel.

In this regard, Ministers Bourguignon and Cluzel entrusted the CSR Platform with the reflection of an extension of the CSR criteria on this subject of employee assistance.

Young caregivers still very invisible

They help their parents to get up, wash themselves, provide medical and administrative follow-up for the home ... They are the 700,000 young caregivers, children, adolescents or young adults, coming to the aid, on a regular basis, for a sick loved one, in a situation of disability or dependency.

According to an Apicil * study, these young people are invisible because they are not spotted and not spotted.

And yet, their situation is at risk, particularly in terms of their education and professional integration.

"They must also face the risks of family breakdown, identity crisis and psycho-affective development disorders", underline the authors of the study.

At the same time, this type of caregiving also has positive aspects.

These young people develop a keen sense of organization, but also emotional intelligence and the ability to interact with people with specific needs.

This is the whole ambivalence of aid.
