On November 9, the second phase of the National Energy Nuclear Power Heating Commercial Demonstration Project was officially put into use in Haiyang City, Shandong Province. The entire urban area of Haiyang City will realize nuclear heating, becoming the country's first "zero-carbon" heating city.

The 200,000 residents of 4.5 million square meters in Haiyang City are all using nuclear energy for heating.

Nuclear energy heating refers to the extraction of steam from the nuclear power plant as a heat source, through the heat exchange station, 5 heat exchanges under the condition of physical isolation, and finally the heat is delivered to the user's home through the municipal heating pipe network.

At the same time, the heating fee for residential heating in Haiyang has been reduced by one yuan per square meter compared with previous years.

It is understood that after the project was put into operation, Haiyang Nuclear Power Unit 1 became the world's largest combined heat and power unit, replacing 12 local coal-fired boilers. It is expected to save 100,000 tons of raw coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 180,000 tons per heating season. Tons, 691 tons of smoke and dust, 1,123 tons of nitrogen oxides, and 1,188 tons of sulfur dioxide, equivalent to planting 1,000 hectares of broad-leaved forests, while reducing heat emission to the environment by 1.3 million GJ, effectively improving the atmospheric environment and marine ecological environment during the district heating season.

Wu Fang, Chairman of the Party Committee of Shandong Nuclear Power, said that after the project was put into operation, Haiyang Nuclear Power Unit 1 became the world's largest cogeneration unit. While ensuring zero-carbon heating in Haiyang City, the two nuclear power units can generate 58 million electricity per day. It can meet the daily electricity consumption of all residents in Qingyanwei area and effectively guarantee the regional power supply.
