What did Elon Musk's Twitter followers respond to after he asked them: Should I sell Tesla shares?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk asked his Twitter followers to vote on whether he should sell 10 percent of his shares in the electric car maker.

The poll, which was launched by Musk via Twitter, resulted in the support of 57.9% of followers for selling shares.

Musk asked the following question on Twitter: “There has been a lot of unrealized gains lately and as a way to evade tax, so I am suggesting to sell 10% of my Tesla stock. Do you support that?”

Twitter users had to choose between "yes" and "no".

By Sunday evening, more than 3.5 million people had voted in the poll within 24 hours. The business magnate has a total of 62.7 million followers on Twitter.

The stock pool that Musk is talking about is currently worth more than $20 billion.

Musk, 50, initially assured Twitter users that he would stick to the poll's result.

Ron Wyden, the US senator from Oregon, was uneasy about Musk's initiative.

Wyden wrote on Twitter: "Whether the world's richest man pays any taxes or not, he should not rely on the results of a Twitter poll.

It is time to impose an income tax on billionaires.”

Musk's fortune has grown strongly in recent months with the steady rise in Tesla's stock price, at least on paper.

However, according to current rules, taxes are only due when he makes a profit on the sale of shares.
