For the third quarter in a row, private salaried employment increased again.

In the third quarter, 96,100 jobs were created in the private sector, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies.

An increase of 0.5%, after an increase of 0.8% in the first quarter of 2021, or 153,800 net job creations and another of 1.4% in the second quarter of 2021, or 265,100 jobs.

In total, at the end of September 2021, private salaried employment exceeded its level prior to the pandemic (i.e. that of the end of 2019) by 0.9% (185,600 jobs).

This first estimate is higher than INSEE forecasts of early October (+ 0.3%).

Interim still below the pre-crisis level

Temporary employment, a compass for the labor market, continues to recover: + 1.4% in the 3rd quarter, after + 2.4% in the 2nd quarter and + 0.7% in the first (i.e. + 11,200 after + 17,900 and +5,200 jobs).

Despite everything, it remains slightly below its pre-crisis level, falling at the end of September 1.0% below its level at the end of 2019, with a decline of 7,800 jobs.

Excluding temporary work, private salaried employment increased by 0.4% in the third quarter of 2021 (+85,000 jobs).

It exceeds its pre-crisis level in all sectors except industry.

Despite a slight increase in the 3rd quarter (+ 0.1%, as in the 2nd, after + 0.2% in the first), industrial employment at the end of September remained significantly lower than its level at the end of 2019: -1.4%, i.e. -45,100 jobs.

Employment stabilizes in the commercial service sector and construction

In the commercial services sector excluding temporary work, private salaried employment is slowing down after an exceptional jump in the previous quarter: + 0.7% after + 2.0% (+86,400 after +228,800 jobs).

The sector, very marked by the health restriction measures from March 2020, experienced a drop of 2.4% over the whole of 2020 (i.e. −287,500 jobs).

At the end of September 2021, employment in this sector exceeded its level at the end of 2019 by 1.0% (+117,900 jobs).

In construction, private salaried employment (excluding temporary work) almost stabilized in the third quarter of 2021 (−0.1% or −1,900 jobs) after five consecutive quarters of increases.

These increases enabled the sector to return to its pre-pandemic level in June 2020 and then to surpass it amply: at the end of September 2021 private salaried employment in construction was 4.4% higher than its level at the end of 2019 (+62,700 jobs).

Likewise, in the third quarter of 2021 private salaried employment in the non-market tertiary sector stabilized (0.0% or +700 jobs) after four successive quarters of increases: + 3.5% over one year between mid-2020 and mid-2020. -2021 (+86,600 net jobs).

It is 2.4% above its level at the end of 2019 (+58,900).
