Israel: Parliament adopts 2021 budget ahead of key 2022 vote

This is the first time in three years that the Israeli government has successfully passed the state budget through the Knesset.

Before that, under the authority of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the country was at an impasse.

With consequences, the dissolution of Parliament and the convening of early legislative elections.

It is a day of celebration for the State of Israel,

61 votes in favor, 59 against.

The ruling coalition has a very narrow majority in parliament.

In the end, it is sufficient to pass the budget.

This vote was the first real test for the government of Naftali Bennett.

In Israel, the ruling majority is hanging on by a thread.

It is a coalition of parties from the right, the center and the left.

A first hurdle cleared

Last June, these political parties put their differences aside and united to oust former Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu from power.

And put an end to two years of political crisis, punctuated by four early legislative elections.

Since then, Benyamin Netanyahu, now leader of the opposition, has promised to return to power.

He lies in ambush and watches for the slightest misstep of the executive.

The adoption of the 2021 budget takes it away from its objective.

But the respite is short-lived for the majority: from this Thursday, debates resume in the Knesset on the 2022 budget.
