The food and beverage industry has criticized the plan of the Ministry of Consumption to regulate the advertising of products considered unhealthy for children.
They consider that this royal decree prepared by the ministry led by Alberto Garzón is "a gratuitous and unjustified attack" on food and beverage manufacturers.
Garzón announced this Thursday
details about the royal decree
in which the ministry works to regulate the advertising of certain foods considered unhealthy that are aimed at children or consumed mainly by them.
This means that brands of products such as chocolate confectionery, chocolates, energy bars, cakes, pastry products, juices and energy drinks and ice creams may not be advertised on television during children's hours or in print media and social networks.
The Spanish Federation of Food and Beverage Industries (FIAB)
and other associations of the food chain have shown their surprise and outrage at the announcement, especially because, they denounce, they have been working with this Ministry for more than a year to update the PAOS Code, the one that companies use to self-regulate advertising directed at children.
Within these negotiations, the food and beverage industry "has voluntarily offered to reduce more than 75% of the advertising aimed at children," they denounce from the aforementioned organizations, which have issued a joint statement to assess this proposal.
"As much in the content of the proposal of the Ministry of Consumption, as in the form and the language used, we
consider that it attacks in a gratuitous and unjustified way the processors of food and beverages
", affirms Mauricio García de Quevedo, general director of FIAB .
They also regret that they are criminalized.
"For the entire sector and its workers, who during the pandemic have set an example of professionalism and commitment to citizens to guarantee their supply,
an advertisement that speaks of"
defending children from the food industry
"
is inadmissible
, says García de Quevedo.
