Aiming to reduce greenhouse gases emitted from ships to virtually zero by 2050, a group created by major shipping company Nippon Yusen and others is using ammonia as a fuel, which does not emit carbon dioxide when burned. I decided to embark on the development of a ship.

This was announced at a press conference online on the 26th by a group made up of five companies and groups, including Nippon Yusen, the shipbuilding company "Nippon Shipyard," and engine manufacturers.

According to this, the ship to be developed will emit greenhouse gas emissions to virtually zero by burning a mixture of ammonia, which does not emit carbon dioxide when burned, and a small amount of biofuel.

Ammonia is planned to be transported as cargo and used as fuel, with the aim of putting it into practical use in 2026.

Regarding the decarbonization of ships, on the 26th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the shipping industry group announced a goal to reduce greenhouse gases emitted by ships involved in international shipping to virtually zero by 2050.

The country also plans to support this group with a maximum of 8.4 billion yen.
