Long decried as unfair, the housing tax was called into question by the legislator in 2018. In order not to rush the local authorities too much, for which this local tax then represented more than a third of financial resources, the law decided to proceed in stages.

After two years of successive reductions, the majority of the population has thus been completely exempt from paying the housing tax on the main residence in 2020. On the other hand, the 20% of the wealthiest households had so far not benefited. no tax relief measures.

The situation is now changing for them.

A first reduction

Like what has been done for other taxpayers, households still affected by the housing tax will in turn benefit from a gradual reduction in this tax from 2021. But not everyone is not in the same boat: it all depends on your tax situation.

This year, a single person benefits from a 100% tax exemption when they have a 2020 reference tax income (RFR) of less than 27,761 euros.

In addition, up to EUR 28,789 of RFR, a reduction of 30% of the amount normally paid applies.

As for a married or PACS couple with only one dependent child, they are exempted below 35,986 euros in tax income and benefit from the 30% drop to 37,528 euros.

The ceilings then increase according to the number of dependents.

After that ?

Remember that the reform of the gradual abolition of the housing tax applies only to the home. If you have a second home, you must always pay this local tax in full. In all cases, your tax notice can be viewed in your personal space on the Impots.gouv.fr site. The exemption or reduction of the tax is carried out automatically and there is therefore no action to be taken.

Be careful, if you notice that the reduction applied is less than 30% compared to the amount paid last year, it is undoubtedly that the municipality has meanwhile increased the base used as the basis for the calculation.

Do not hesitate to contact the tax department to make sure.

Note that in 2022, you will benefit from a 65% reduction, before a total abolition of the housing tax for all French people in 2023.
