After 74 years of flying... The last flight of Alitalia Airlines today: "a trip without return"!

Thursday evening, a chapter in the history of the Italian airline industry ends, when Alitalia operates its last flights.

The Italian company, which was decided to be liquidated and to establish another company to replace it, is scheduled to fly the last flight from Cagliari Airport on the island of Sardinia to the capital, Rome, this evening.

The flight from Cagliari is expected to arrive at Rome-Fiumiciano Airport in the Italian capital at 11:10 pm, according to an Alitalia spokesman for the German news agency (dpa).

With the arrival of the last flight, Alitalia will be permanently retired after 74 years in the aviation industry, where the company began operations in 1947.

The new Italian state airline, Trasporto Aero, is scheduled to start operating on Friday.

Trasporto Aero will be the successor to Alitalia, but it will not be an "economic successor" to the company, according to the European Commission's decision, which wants Trasporto Aero to break away from Alitalia's financially troubled past.
