Intelligent connected cars are one of the typical application areas where 5G is deeply integrated with vertical industries.

With its low latency, high reliability and other characteristics, 5G network effectively improves the information collection, dissemination, processing and utilization capabilities of intelligent networked vehicles, and improves the level of road traffic safety.

"In recent years, my country has always regarded intelligent and connected vehicles as an important direction for the transformation and upgrading of the automotive industry. It has actively organized key technology research and demonstrations of manned and passenger applications, and promoted 5G, computing platforms, lidar, and V2X (cars and external information exchanges). ) And other technology research and development, continue to make new breakthroughs." At the 2021 World Intelligent Connected Vehicle Conference held recently, Zhang Yanchuan, vice chairman of the China Institute of Communications, said.

"With the continuous addition of new scenarios such as vehicle formation, autonomous driving, and remote driving, intelligent networked vehicles have put forward higher requirements on the bandwidth, mobility, delay, and connection capabilities of the communication network. For this reason, we proposed the '5G+ plan' , By improving the technical level of networks, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other technologies to promote the collaborative sharing of vehicles, roads, clouds, and networks, and improve the accuracy of information, so that vehicles have the ability to sense, make decisions and control." Wei Chenguang, Vice President of China Mobile Communications Research Institute Introduction, first, we must introduce a new QOS (Quality of Service) mechanism to ensure network quality and reduce transmission delay; secondly, by providing new roadside units, using direct connection features and network scheduling modes to increase network capacity; finally, we must Allocate independent 5G slices for the Internet of Vehicles business to ensure its special requirements for network performance.

The deep integration of intelligent networked vehicles and 5G technology will also help the construction of smart transportation and smart cities.

At Shanghai Yangshan Deepwater Port, the "5G+L4 level intelligent driving heavy truck" project has begun commercial operation.

With the blessing of 5G and V2X technology, smart heavy trucks can realize L4-level automatic driving, centimeter-level positioning, and precise parking in specific scenarios in the port area, and cooperate with automated port machinery equipment to complete cargo loading and unloading within 15 seconds, with optimal autonomous planning Route, accurately transport the goods to the designated location.

“Parking at the port requires not only precision but also speed. Our smart heavy truck takes less than 70 seconds to park and the error can be controlled within 3 millimeters.” said Yang Lei, chief operating officer of Shanghai Youdao Zhitu Technology Co., Ltd., Dangduo When a fleet of smart heavy trucks is driving on the Donghai Bridge, the combination of 5G and V2X technology can shorten the distance between vehicles to 16 meters and improve traffic efficiency.

The innovative application of 5G in urban transportation also brings a more efficient, safe and convenient travel experience for the public.

"The '5G+smart transportation' demonstration project we built in Zhengzhou, Henan Province is the first in the industry to achieve normal operation on open roads." Lin Ming, deputy dean of Yutong Bus Design Institute, said that 27 projects have been planned and constructed along the route. The 5G base station, through real-time monitoring of passenger flow and big data analysis, dynamically adjusts the frequency of departures, while improving the quality of service, it helps to promote the digital and intelligent transformation of urban traffic management.

"With the empowerment of 5G, artificial intelligence and big data technologies, the value of intelligent networked buses has been fully demonstrated. At present, the efficiency of intersection traffic has increased from 47% to 79%, and the operating speed can be doubled, which greatly increases The certainty and planability of citizens' travel. The 5G network has also increased the OTA (over-the-air download technology) rate by 100 times, ensuring rapid and stable system upgrades." Lin Ming said.

Although 5G has opened up a fast road for the development of intelligent networked vehicles, it still faces many challenges on the journey.

"The most difficult problem is still the network supply capacity." Wei Chenguang said frankly that there is currently no way to fully meet the business needs of high-level autonomous driving, whether it is network reliability or coverage continuity, but cellular networks, direct communications, and satellite communications. The fusion of multiple communication methods may be able to provide new solutions for the above scenarios.

In addition, the development of intelligent networked vehicles requires the extensive participation of ordinary users.

At present, many application scenarios only stay in special fields such as ports, mines, and parks. Competitive product-level services have not yet been formed. How to enable more people to use intelligent networked vehicles requires continued exploration by all parties.

The cost is also one of the problems restricting the development of the industry.

"Network construction, vehicle prices, road facilities, etc. must be considered. Only by lowering the cost threshold will more people be attracted to join the industry. The safety assurance capabilities of intelligent networked vehicles must also be based on top-level design, technical means, and management. System planning, forming a joint force." Wei Chenguang said.
