Iran and Russia to sign strategic partnership, Tehran announces

Tehran looks east.

Iran announced Monday, October 11, the signing in the coming months of a strategic partnership agreement with Moscow.

It is not a surprise, the two countries are already collaborating in the commercial, security or military fields… But after a similar agreement signed with China, Iran takes a step further east.

Few details have filtered out on the content of the agreement that Moscow has yet to sign, but, according to the Iranian foreign spokesman, the document "corresponds to the plan drawn up" 7 months ago with China. 

On March 27, Tehran and Beijing sealed a 25-year cooperation agreement.

The text notably provides for Chinese investments in the energy and automotive sectors. 

Between Iran, China and Russia, the eastern axis is emerging,

 " greeted Saïd Khatibzadeh, the spokesperson for diplomacy in Tehran.

Stifled by Western sanctions, and as the resumption of the Vienna negotiations on the nuclear program is slipping, Iran is trying to break out of its isolation by the east.

On September 17, the administration of new President Ebrahim Raïssi obtained a promise to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a trade and strategic alliance led by China and Russia to counter American influence. 

On the side of Tehran, however, we defend ourselves against wanting to break with the West: "

Iran is not subordinated to either China or the United States

," said an official, who continued: " 

Iran is a Eurasian country. which must have a balanced relationship on both sides
