The American auto company Ford wants to expand the production of electric cars with investments amounting to more than eleven billion dollars.

By 2025, four new plants are to be built and 11,000 jobs created, as the company announced on Monday.

Ford wants to build the factories together with its South Korean partner SK Innovation in the American states of Kentucky and Tennessee.

The automaker says it is providing $ 7 billion for the project, with SK contributing the remaining $ 4.4 billion.

Ford CEO Bill Ford said his company wanted to "lead America's transition to electric vehicles and usher in a new era of clean, carbon-neutral manufacturing."

The automaker assumes that the proportion of pure electric cars in its fleet will increase to 40 to 50 percent by 2030.

Ford is currently seeing strong demand for the new F-150 Lightning pickup truck and other electric models such as the E-Transit and the Mustang Mach-E.
