The Federal Customs Authority has signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding with the Automobile and Tourism Club of the Emirates and the International Road Transport Union (IRU), with the aim of strengthening the strategic partnership in the implementation of the "Digital TIR Card" system, and the management and control of goods transfers between customs departments qualified to use the system in the country and approved by the Authority.

A statement issued yesterday stated that the "digital TIR card" is the first of its kind in the TIR system, as this idea is a proposal submitted by the UAE, which is considered the first in the region's application.

According to the memorandum of understanding signed via visual communication technology, the three parties adopt the “digital TIR” transport cards as an updated card, which is printed and extracted through the electronic application of the International Road Transport Union, and is used as an alternative to the TIR book in goods transport operations from the departure customs office. The TIR system aims to enhance the customs risk management system locally and internationally, by applying an advanced electronic mechanism to accredit goods transport companies in the TIR system, providing feedback from customs administrations electronically, early detection of any potential violations in the transport of goods through border crossings, and simplifying Customs procedures, facilitating the transit movement of trucks in a short period of time and at a lower cost.

And strengthening the country’s position in the global trade map, the principle of transparency, freedom of transit and customs cooperation, pointing out that the system allows the passage of vehicles or containers closed with customs seal from the country to the final destination, according to simplified procedures, and without the need for inspection through border crossings, and using customs guarantee Global.

For his part, the President of the Automobile and Tourism Club of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed Ahmed bin Sulayem, expressed his confidence that this project will meet the vision of the UAE in reducing the carbon footprint, and the transition towards a digital economy, through the governance and standardization of customs procedures, pointing out that the digital TIR project provides about 80% of the time for the participating companies, which contributes to reducing the cost by more than 45%, in addition to the speed of obtaining the digital TIR card, which enhances the ease of transporting goods.

As for the Secretary-General of the International Road Transport Union, Umberto de Brito, he said that the efforts of the Federal Customs Authority to shift towards the "digital pace" demonstrate its commitment to support the movement of trade and the smooth functioning of the ports effectively through the automation of customs procedures, and this will undoubtedly lead to real benefits.
