In the 12-week period of this year with delayed summer holidays in the federal states, 28.6 million travelers used a German airport as a starting or destination point for their holidays.

The airport association ADV announced on Saturday.

This corresponds to an increase of 14.9 million passengers compared to the 2020 summer holiday season. However, at just over half the number is a long way from the pre-crisis level in 2019.

“People want to take air travel again, despite the frequently changing travel regulations that the pandemic situation brings with it,” said ADV CEO Ralph Beisel.

“Based on the booking figures, it can be assumed that the current good level will continue in October.

With the end of the holiday season, the demand for business travel also comes back. "

Loss of billions is foreseeable

According to ADV, the airports continue to lose around 250 million euros in sales every month.

"As in the previous year, German airports will also close with a loss of billions in 2021," said Beisel.

In addition to the hygiene measures, a challenge for the airports is that trips in the Corona crisis are booked at short notice.

This complicates the control of the operational airport processes.
