Almost ten years after the shutdown of the P6 blast furnace, Arcelor Mittal inaugurated its new Galsa2 galvanizing line in Florange (Moselle), reports France 3 Grand-Est.
About a hundred guests were able to discover the tool presented by the steel giant as ultramodern and clean.
Production began on the site in spring 2020 but the official baptism was postponed due to the health crisis.
Operators are piloting the new line via a tablet interface reminiscent of a smartphone application.
They can anticipate breakdowns thanks to a maintenance qualified as “predictive”, where the system itself alerts of an upcoming malfunction.
From Elsa to Galsa2
In order to satisfy its customers and increase production capacities, Arcelor Mittal had gradually transformed its cold rolling line Elsa into Galsa2.
The latter has been running 24 hours a day, seven days a week since February 2021 with five teams at the helm.
The ambition is to reach 800,000 tonnes of flat rolled steel each year at full load.
Present at the inauguration, the CGT regretted the low number of employees invited.
"629 jobs were destroyed with the shutdown of the cast iron industry, and Galsa2, [it is not even a hundred jobs," furthermore deplored the union.
