Afghanistan: Washington grants exemptions from economic sanctions imposed on the Taliban

Half of the Afghan population is currently dependent on humanitarian aid.

In order to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid in Afghanistan, Washington grants two exemptions from the economic sanctions imposed on the Taliban.

There is an emergency, millions of Afghans need international humanitarian aid to survive and the country is sinking into precariousness due to international sanctions.

The first exemption allows the US government, NGOs, certain international organizations and entities to provide humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.

Washington also authorizes the export to Afghanistan of agricultural products, drugs and medical equipment.

On the other hand, the United States maintains the freeze on the reserves of the Afghan Central Bank held in Washington.

These exemptions had become urgent.

As winter approaches, economically ruined Afghanistan risks plunging into a serious humanitarian crisis without international aid.

Since the Taliban took power, several humanitarian programs have been suspended and foreign funding interrupted, including those from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

According to the United Nations, half of the population, or 18 million people, depend on international humanitarian aid.

At the instigation of the United Nations, the international community this month pledged to provide nearly one billion euros in aid to Afghanistan.
