• Bordeaux is ahead of Aix-en-Provence, which gains one place, and Toulouse, which falls by one rank.

  • The Gironde capital even appeals to millennials, since it is now second among those under 35.

  • The Great Place To Work study also observes changes that are taking place among French workers, in view of the rise of teleworking and the health crisis.

And the first remains… Bordeaux.

For the eighth year in a row, the Gironde capital is at the top of the ranking of the cities where the French would most like to work, established by the audit firm Great Place To Work, which measures the quality of life at work.

Once again this year, the French are expressing their preferences for cities in the South of France.

If Bordeaux was "acclaimed by one respondent in four", Aix-en-Provence gains a place and ranks second, and Toulouse which falls by a third rank.

Paris comes in fourth place in the ranking, just ahead of Lyon and Montpellier.

New expectations regarding work-life balance

According to the analysis of Great Place To Work, Bordeaux seduces by "the quality of life offered to its inhabitants, but also its strong economic dynamism".

And the city is progressing even among millennials, since it takes second place in Lyon among the under 35s, just behind Paris which continues to dominate the ranking in this category.

The study also reveals real changes that are apparently taking place among French workers.

“The democratization of teleworking, accelerated by the health crisis, has led many French people to re-examine, during successive confinements, their expectations vis-à-vis their work-life balance.

Many of them have decided to take the plunge and move away from their place of work, putting their business in the face of a fait accompli.

"The French today prioritize the quality of life"

In search of a balance between their professional and personal life, “the French today prioritize the quality of life (54%), the relationships they maintain (14%) and the cost of real estate (12% ) in the choice of their place of residence ”, again according to the Great Place To Work study.

However, these new expectations do not always mean that they plan to build a life elsewhere: “48% of French people indicate that they live in one of the cities they have selected among their favorites.

"They are also less willing than in the past to move for their work," a figure down 5 points among those under 35.

"

This analysis relates to the results of the “Great Insights” survey carried out in January 2021 by Great Place To Work France with a representative sample of 4,119 French workers.
