Pets commemorate the two heavens of the economy: customized souvenirs online Fengfengkou funeral service line meets the cold snap

On August 12th, Ms. Liu from Chengdu posted a circle of friends that she could only see. That day was the fifth day after the death of her pet dog.

She customized a wooden necklace on the e-commerce platform with pet hair inside.

"Touch the necklace when you think about it, as if it is still around." The price of this wooden design souvenir is not cheap. "One sells for more than 400 yuan."

In the past two years, hot pet service consumption has given birth to market segments such as pet souvenir design customization and pet farewell.

According to the "White Paper on China's Pet Industry in 2020" (Consumption Report), the number of dogs and cats in China's urban areas will exceed 100 million in 2020, and the scale of the consumer market will reach 206.5 billion yuan.

At the same time, the annual consumption of a single pet per capita in China's cities and towns reached 5,172 yuan.

In the field of pet memorial economy, not all are blue oceans.

In the past few days, a number of industry insiders have been interviewed by the Chengdu Commercial Daily-Red Star News reporters and found that the online pet souvenir customization industry is relatively popular, while the offline farewell service sector currently has a low market penetration rate.

At the same time, most of this field exists in the form of self-employed, and industry leaders including Boqi.com have not set foot in this field.

"The industry still needs to be regulated" is the consensus of the industry.

  Pet souvenirs

  Popular

"The industry is in short supply, and the busiest time is up to two or three months later."

  How popular are pet souvenirs?

On an e-commerce platform, the reporter searched with "pet souvenirs" as a keyword, and found more than 15,000 related products. The search results included customized pet necklaces, pendants, ornaments, oil paintings, wool felts, etc.

The most expensive ones are customized for diamonds and spars, with prices ranging from several thousand yuan to several tens of thousands yuan.

The highest-selling product is a pet commemorative brand, with a turnover of over 120,000 pieces.

Kang Qin, the owner of the Yujiewu felt craft shop, has been in this business for 8 years.

"Many people will have a misunderstanding when they see our store, thinking that they will only customize products after pets leave. In fact, many pet owners regard pets as members of the family. These three-dimensional photo frames are just ordinary home decorations and customized souvenirs. "Kang Qin comes from Yibin, Sichuan. The main business of the shop is to customize three-dimensional pet photo frames in the form of wool felt.

She believes that this is a sub-industry extended by the pet economy.

"Although it is handmade, not everyone is willing to pay for the manual at the beginning, and it is difficult to realize it." What really made her cut into the "pet track" was because one day a pet owner came to the door and told Her own pet passed away, hoping to order a wool felt ornament as a souvenir.

Since then, Kang Qin has insisted on customizing wool felt photo frames for 8 years.

Kang Qin said that this industry is relatively boring and takes a long time. It takes three or four weeks at the earliest for a product from the initial communication to the completion of production.

"These factors do not affect the fact that it is an industry with huge demand." As far as her own store is concerned, "After two or three months of the busiest time list, the supply is in short supply."

  Pet funeral

  Cold

"Price competition plus service competition, the market will become cruel"

As another wing of the pet commemorative economy, in contrast, offline pet farewell services are somewhat deserted.

Zhong Chaoxiang, the founder of Huixing Story, and his wife Yueer are engaged in this business.

In 2019, the two transformed a farm pigsty into a pet farewell service venue in Chengdu Xindu District to provide pet farewell services for those who have lost their pets.

Zhong Chaoxiang said that when it first started operations, there were no more than 5 companies engaged in pet funeral services in Chengdu.

But now, according to incomplete statistics, this number has become about 20, "It seems that everyone thinks this is an industry outlet."

He believes that pet funeral services belong to the offline service industry and have preconditions-that is, the death of pets.

The number of pets in a city is limited, and the geographical coverage of offline services is also very limited.

The geographical bottleneck, the bottleneck in quantity, and the fact that it is not just in demand, so relying solely on offline farewell services, merchants are "unsustainable".

"The change in the consumption concept of pet owners, price competition and service competition, will gradually enter the market elimination mechanism, and the market will become very cruel." In the past two years, he has seen continuous business failures, but there are still people entering the game. .

Regarding pet funeral services, another person in the industry believes that the domestic pet funeral industry has formed a set of service procedures, but what restricts the development of the pet farewell industry is the lack of relevant support for pet cremation and pet cemeteries.

On the other hand, because pet funeral services usually involve multiple departments such as civil affairs, environmental protection, agriculture and forestry, it is difficult to classify. Currently, there is no department that can be in charge of this business. It is also because of the lack of unified management and standards, the pricing of each institution is different. Larger, the service level and practice level of pet funeral directors are also uneven.

How do industry experts view the pet memorial economy?

"The domestic pet industry is still in the early stages of development"

The reporter observed that although there are many merchants entering the pet memorial economic circuit, most of them are self-employed.

The reporter called a number of leading companies in the industry, including the e-commerce platform Boqi.com and the offline platform Tortoise and Panda. They all stated that they did not provide pet souvenir design customization or farewell services.

"Currently, the domestic pet holdings are about 10%, and there is still a big gap compared with the 60% to 70% pet holdings of some developed countries." Zhang Yongbing, secretary general of the Sichuan Pet Association, believes that China has a large population base. Coupled with rising consumption levels, the pet industry may continue to maintain rapid growth in the next 10 years.

"At present, the domestic pet industry is still in the early stages of development. Although it has basically formed a standard, there are still many areas to be explored." He took the pet funeral industry as an example, saying that in accordance with relevant policies, dead pets must be treated in a harmless manner. Entrust a harmless disposal site for disposal, and do not bury or abandon pet carcasses without authorization.

However, due to various reasons, there is still a lack of support from relevant laws and regulations. For example, there is currently no special pet cemetery in China.

"It is equally important to cultivate the awareness of pet owners." He said that although Chengdu currently has 4 legally compliant decontamination treatment centers that provide pet owners with pet decontamination treatment services, "but not every business They are all very hot."

From the perspective of the online souvenir industry, he believes that although it is not popular, it is an industry development trend.

"On the whole, although there are some controversies about the pet memorial economy, exploration is still going on."
