The deadly fighting took place in Al-Bayda province, an area in central Yemen where Houthi rebels have made progress in recent weeks against government forces.

The rebel movement is also on the offensive in the Marib region further north, where Houthi assaults have claimed hundreds of lives on both sides since February 2021.

Six and a half years after a coalition led by Saudi Arabia entered the war in Yemen, the loyalist camp has never succeeded in repelling the Houthi insurgents, backed by Iran.

A very uncertain negotiation process

A new UN special envoy for Yemen has just taken office.

Swede Hans Grundberg arrived in Riyadh yesterday to meet Saudi and Yemeni representatives.

The objective is to relaunch a very uncertain negotiation process.

The conflict in Yemen, a poor country in the Arabian Peninsula, erupted in 2014 after an offensive by the Houthis from the north.

The country has become, since that date, the worst humanitarian disaster in the world according to the UN, with tens of thousands of deaths according to NGOs and a population on the brink of famine.
