The third most popular destination for the French, the Basque Country is a victim of its own success.

So, as

Ouest-France

reported on

Thursday, the urban community of the Basque Country is looking for solutions to fight against mass tourism in July and August.

To do this, elected officials try to highlight the hinterland.

The objective would be to encourage tourists to come outside the summer period and to abandon the seaside resorts a little in favor of other territories.

The

Guide du Routard

was therefore asked to

focus on villages, the countryside and outdoor activities.

Develop agritourism

“We want to manage flows” by offering “outings off the beaten track” explained to our colleagues Daniel Olçomendy, vice-president of the Basque Country urban community in charge of tourism.

While the local hiking plan has been revisited, it focuses, with the other elected officials, on agriturism.

The department and the urban community of the Basque Country are therefore seeking to encourage the creation of lodges and guest rooms by helping structures in the hinterland.

Discussions are also underway with transport companies to develop new tourist lines.

Likewise, in order to facilitate cohabitation, mediators will be set up in these rural areas.
