Majid Al Futtaim, which develops and manages shopping malls, integrated cities, retail and entertainment facilities in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, has launched a program targeting women in computer programming, the first of its kind in the region for the private sector.

The company said in a statement that this announcement comes in line with the government initiative "The 50 Projects", which aims to include 100 programmers per day in the workforce in the UAE, and to reach the highest percentage of women programmers per capita in the world during the next five years.

Majid Al Futtaim confirmed that it will provide a unique platform for women in the field of technology, allowing them to contribute to it effectively, pointing out that the program aims to train 5,000 women over the next five years, and targets university students, recent graduates and working women, and seeks to develop the skills of Majid employees. The program will initially focus on creating a technical community dedicated to the interactive sharing of knowledge in cooperation with the UAE government and the rest of the workers in the sector and academia, and will include communication with universities across the Emirates, to enhance interest in technical issues, and encourage women to enter the sector at a faster pace.

Through this program and other initiatives across the company, Majid Al Futtaim will be able to achieve its goal of increasing the proportion of women working in the advanced and digital technology field in the company to 35% by 2023.

CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Holding Company, Alain Bejjani, said that there are many challenges that discourage women from working in the digital field, which leads to widening the existing skills gap between the sexes.

"By launching the first company-led program targeting women programmers in the UAE, we affirm our commitment to developing and benefiting from the available local capabilities," he added.

According to the statement, Majid Al Futtaim will launch a number of initiatives aimed at encouraging women to enter the field of technology, providing opportunities to develop skills and supporting them to assume senior positions in the sector.

The Majid Al Futtaim School of Analytics and Technology will conduct coding courses for women outside the business system, provide them with training opportunities, professional guidance and mentorship. The company will also provide the possibility of self-employment, and continue to promote flexible work options.
