The number of corona infections is increasing and the vaccination campaign is stalling - medical president Klaus Reinhardt is therefore calling for a fresh start.

Many unvaccinated people are not convinced that they refuse to be vaccinated, said the President of the German Medical Association of the German Press Agency.

"In order to reach these undecided people, the vaccination campaign in Germany has to be completely redesigned."

The request to "sleeves up" initially worked.

"But now we need much more targeted communication measures and low-threshold vaccination offers." What is needed are creative concepts.

Low vaccination rate in the east

"The vaccination rate is too low in all of Germany, but especially in the eastern federal states," explained Reinhardt.

That is questionable with a view to autumn and winter.

The federal government wants to kick-start vaccinations with a nationwide week of action starting next Monday.

Together with the federal states, it calls for easy-to-see offers to be made in as many places as possible - for example in sports clubs, at the voluntary fire brigade, in pharmacies or multigenerational houses - with the motto: "This is where vaccination takes place".

Vaccination offers should be found on the website www.hierwirdgeimpft.de.

Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) wants to speak to the head of the Robert Koch Institute, Lothar Wieler, on the status of the vaccination campaign this Wednesday.

On the program "RTL Direkt" he said that he was always amazed at how many people had not yet been vaccinated even though they had no problem with the vaccination: "We want to give them an easy opportunity."

The state governments in Saxony and Thuringia, the two countries with the fewest initial vaccinations, are also banking on this.

"We see that education and discussions are important in order to convince people who are still hesitant," said the Saxon Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) of the dpa.

Vaccinate while exercising or shopping

The Thuringian Minister of Social Affairs Heike Werner (left) appealed to citizens to use offers.

"We put a lot of effort into getting the vaccinations as close as possible to the people," said Werner of the dpa.

She referred to vaccination campaigns in shopping centers, at sporting events and without an appointment.

Others are skeptical, such as Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD).

“We did a lot of educational work,” he said on Tuesday, referring to letter and media campaigns as well as low-threshold offers.

But everything is going tough.

"I'm now getting to a point where I think maybe we have exhausted what we can do as politics."

The President of the German Children's Fund, Thomas Krüger, asked all adults to be given the protective tip out of consideration for children who cannot be vaccinated.

"It is completely inconsiderate not to be vaccinated," he told the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung".

A lot has been demanded of the children in recent months due to the closure of schools and daycare centers in order to protect the elderly.

Now the consideration has to go in the other direction.

So far, 61.5 percent of the population in Germany has been fully vaccinated, 65.9 percent have at least one vaccination (RKI data from Tuesday).

In order to flatten the fourth wave of the pandemic, a vaccination rate of 80 to 90 percent is considered necessary.

The director of virology at the University Hospital Essen warned of an overload in the intensive care units. "We are slowly ruining the health system," said Ulf Dittmer of the "Rheinische Post". In his clinic, the number of sick people with severe symptoms is 23. Of these, 20 are not vaccinated and the youngest is 20 years old. Dittmer therefore called for a discussion about the compulsory vaccination. "We need to talk about that," he said. There is already no more free space in North Rhine-Westphalia for treatment with a heart-lung machine.
