Bakeries in northern Lebanon will close from Wednesday until further notice.

The owners of these establishments can no longer ensure the production of bread.

They deplore the fact that the authorities have taken no steps to ensure the proper distribution of flour and fuel oil in this poorest region of Lebanon.

More than a million people will be affected in northern Lebanon by the closure of bakeries for lack of fuel oil.

The whole of Lebanon is suffering the effects of the fuel shortage and the drastic decline in the production of electricity supplied by the state.

But the north is by far the most affected region.

It has the highest rates of poverty and unemployment.

Insecurity is also higher there than elsewhere.

Not a day goes by without armed incidents in Tripoli, Lebanon's second largest city.

At night, the inhabitants hide in their houses, frightened by the exchanges of fire and the throwing of grenades.

The army strengthens its presence in the region

Even the elite police units deployed to ferry fuel tankers no longer dare to accomplish their mission.

Last week, police officers preferred to flee in front of armed gangs which intercepted and diverted shipments of fuel oil supposed to be distributed to bakeries and electric generators.

On August 15, around 30 people died in the

in the poor region of Akkar.

The Lebanese army, which recruits the bulk of its contingents in the north, has strengthened its presence in this region.

She tries as best she can to maintain calm without being too out of step with an exasperated population.
