It's hard to describe the Hyundai Ioniq 5 as it is so original!

Halfway between a sedan and an SUV, it is surprising in more than one way.

On the one hand because it has retro hints in its modernity, with certain similarities with the Lancia Delta or with the Fiat 127 of the 80s, and on the other hand because it is much larger than it is. it seems.

As proof, it is 14 cm longer ... than the Tucson, and it is as high as the latter.

It is especially inside that its real size is revealed as the space is generous, wherever you are. Taking advantage of a huge wheelbase of 300 cm and a completely flat floor thanks to its electric architecture, the Ioniq 5 takes particular care of its passengers in a universe that is just as “design” as its bodywork. This is certainly what explains why it has already become the darling of Monegasque taximen!

Inspired by Asian furnishings, the horizontal and deliberately stripped-down on-board furniture inspires zenitude, an impression reinforced by the great comfort of the seats.

It feels like being on board a concept car as the atmosphere is resolutely avant-garde.

The general finish is of good quality, even if we can regret the use of certain materials, such as for example the plastic of the door panels, a little too hard and sensitive to scratches.

Three mechanics

For the launch of the Ioniq 5, Hyundai offers three power levels: the entry level benefits from the 58 kWh battery and offers 170 horsepower. Next comes the offer which should constitute the majority of sales, with a capacity of 73 kWh and 218 horsepower. Finally, the top of the range will be represented during the month of September by a version with two electric motors, based on the 73 kWh battery, and which will develop 306 horsepower. The manufacturer announces a maximum range of 481 km (WLTP) for the intermediate version, which makes it a champion in this segment. The other good news is that the Ioniq 5 is the third car on the market (and the only one at this price) to offer 800V charging technology, which allows it, under optimal conditions, to go from 10 to 80% of charges in just 18 minutes! On a wallbox, the Korean goes up to 11 kW, which gives a little over 6 hours for a full charge.

Mature

In use, the Ioniq 5 drives with your fingertips in impressive silence.

The 218hp version of which we were able to take the wheel showed very decent performance, helped by its high torque (350 Nm).

Equipped with very flexible suspensions, the car encourages “cool” driving, particularly in tune with its green nature.

During our test, we did not exceed an average consumption of 15kWh / 100km, which is very well given its size.

It also seems that the 481 km announced are realistic in “normal” driving and on condition of not taking too many expressways, Achilles heels of electric cars.

Offered from € 43,600 incl. VAT and guaranteed for 5 years with no mileage limit (8 years or 160,000 km for the batteries), the Ioniq 5 is set to have a great career.

For such a price / performance ratio, there is no real competition at the moment.
