DP World Group has agreed with Visco, a multimodal transport services company in Russia, to conduct a joint study, including technical and economic aspects, to develop a new container berth in the Far East of Russia.

A statement issued yesterday said that the new berth will contribute to the expansion of the commercial port of "Vladivostok", a major trans-shipment center, linking goods coming from countries in the East Asian region to northwestern Europe, through the Northern Sea Corridor, pointing out that this comes after a previous agreement concluded "DP World" and "Rosatom" to explore opportunities for sustainable development of the corridor, which enhances the flexibility of global trade movement.

The agreement was recently signed during the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World Group, and Andrei Severlov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Visco.

Huge potential

Bin Sulayem said that DP World supports Russian President Vladimir Putin's vision of the Northern Sea Corridor, which is one of the last great corridors of trade in the world to be developed.

"The Northern Sea Corridor has enormous potential to develop economic activity and promote prosperity in Russia's Far North, and this should be done sustainably to protect the clean waters of the Arctic," he added.

For his part, Visco Chairman Andrei Severlov said: "We are pleased to cooperate with a company like DP World, which handles nearly 10% of container traffic worldwide."

North Passage

According to the statement, the berth in Vladivostok is part of the infrastructure necessary for the full development of the Northern Sea Corridor.

According to the plans in place, the goods will be transported to Vladivostok by short- and medium-distance sea freight services and rail freight from countries in East Asia, and loaded onto container ships dedicated to the Arctic, and Murmansk will be further developed, as a transshipment center. In the West, to connect goods to ports in Northwest Europe. Short and medium-distance shipping operations in DP World will serve Vladivostok and Murmansk to provide faster shipping solutions to customers, improve supply chain flexibility, and the Northern Sea Corridor will allow DP World to continue providing integrated logistics solutions to customers. .

It is noteworthy that 33 million tons of cargo were transported through the Northern Sea Corridor in 2020, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has set a target of 80 million tons by 2021. The project reduces about 4,000 nautical miles of cruises between East Asia and northwest Europe, This reduces charging time by about two weeks, and lowers carbon dioxide emissions.
