If you are thinking about switching to the electric car, you should know that insuring an electric vehicle costs more than a model with a combustion engine.

According to the specialist site Lesfurets.com, insuring a Renault Zoe, one of the most popular electric cars, costs almost twice as much as a Clio.

Why such a difference ?

Explanations.

DECRYPTION

The creation of the electric car was a revolution for the automotive industry, but it is in return much more expensive.

Despite the purchase aid, cars cost more and insurance too, according to a study published on Thursday by Lesfurets.com, a site specializing in auto insurance.

In particular, for cars of the same class, the lowest insurance rate on the market is higher for an electric vehicle than for a conventional car.

An almost doubled bill

This price can vary from a few tens of euros more, up to 150, even 200 euros in some cases.

Take the example of a Renault Zoé.

The lowest price for comprehensive insurance is 525 euros per year, compared to 280 euros for a Clio, almost double.

What future for the electric car market?

Aid and bonuses not taken into account

If we stay with a car of equal status, insurance is therefore more expensive for an electric car.

Why so much difference?

It is the selling price of the vehicle that changes the situation because the amount of the insurance premium is mainly aligned with the price of the vehicles.

An electric car costs more on paper than a gasoline-powered car. For example, a Clio costs 17,000 euros and a Zoe 34,000 euros, twice that. Obviously, there are a whole bunch of bonuses and aids that drastically reduce the purchase bill for an electric, but they are not taken into account in the calculation of the insurance.
