The UAE has advanced five ranks worldwide in the Competitive Industrial Performance Index, which is issued annually by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) according to the 2021 assessment, and the UAE has maintained its lead in the list of Arab countries in the index, in a new international certification of its well-established position. The national industry and business environment in the country, which is moving towards further strengthening and empowerment, with the launch of the National Strategy for Industry and Advanced Technology.

The UAE advanced from the 35th place to the 30th place in the index that monitors the performance of 152 countries, topping the performance of the Gulf and Arab countries, to continue an upward path during which it advanced nine ranks in the index during the last four years.

The report praised the progress made in the UAE, especially in the areas of infrastructure and the industrial business environment, pointing to the importance of what the state is doing in terms of sustainable growth in the industrial sector, through the dissemination of advanced technology in various fields of manufacturing, in addition to promoting education based on scientific materials. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, said: "The report of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), confirms the international position that the UAE has reached in the process of modernizing and developing the contribution of the industrial sector, and enhancing the flexibility and sustainability of economic development, in line with the vision of And the directives of the wise leadership that is always keen to lay the sound foundations for sustainable economic and social growth for the next 50 years and beyond.”

He explained that "the report, in its monitoring of the growth path of the UAE industrial sector, identified the main features of the industrial development model in the country, by linking it to the path of the UAE Vision 2021 and the National Agenda for 2014, which identified national priorities in the industrial sector, especially in terms of reliance on the knowledge economy." He affirmed confidence that the coming years will witness greater progress in international indicators.

Strategy objectives

He added that "the country's progress in the report serves the objectives of the national strategy for industry and advanced technology, in terms of creating an appropriate and attractive business environment for local and international investors in the industrial sector, supporting the growth of national industries and enhancing their competitiveness, and enhancing innovation efforts and adopting advanced technology in industrial systems and solutions, in a way that supports Strengthening the country’s position as a leading global destination for the industries of the future.”

Al Jaber continued: “The UAE industry sector has solid foundations that include advanced infrastructure, technology capabilities, an attractive system for investments, smart capital and human resources, in addition to the advantages offered by relevant laws and legislation, which are factors that support the efforts of the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology to implement its strategy, which Advanced technology and knowledge will have a pivotal role in it, with our focus on strengthening national capabilities in the industries of the future, and adopting the applications and solutions of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

The Competitive Industrial Performance Index report aims to assess and measure the industrial competitiveness of economies, through three main axes, which are “the ability to produce and export manufactured goods”, “technological upgrading”, and “global influence”, and these three axes, in turn, are divided into eight sub-indicators.

The report recorded qualitative leaps in industrial competitive performance for the benefit of the UAE in four out of eight sub-indicators, as it advanced from the 31st to the 17th globally in the index of industrial exports per capita, and from the 40th to 32nd in the "industrial exports" index. .

It also advanced to the 107th place in the "Share of industrial exports in total exports" index after it was in the 115th place, and it also advanced one rank to reach the 28th place globally in the "Per capita value added of manufacturing" index.

Germany ranked first in the index for 2021, followed by China, the United States of America, Japan and the Republic of Korea, respectively.

The UAE was the only country to get a "high performance" rating in the index, and third in the Middle East alongside Turkey and Israel.

The report praised the UAE's industrial development model, noting that the state has allocated many resources and efforts to shift towards a knowledge economy, by supporting innovation and development, as well as advancing education, in line with international standards, and balancing infrastructure development and environmental protection.
