The report issued by the International Economics and Trade Research Center of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies stated that in 2020, affected by the epidemic, the scale of Guangdong's imports and exports will slightly shrink, and the development of foreign trade has shown a certain degree of resilience.
In the context of a complex and volatile international economy and trade, Guangdong’s foreign trade development experienced ups and downs. The first quarter fell sharply year-on-year, and then gradually recovered, reaching its highest value in the third quarter and a slight decline in the fourth quarter.
The overall development trend of Guangdong's import and export trade remained stable, with a slight decrease.
In RMB terms, in 2020, the total value of imports and exports of goods was 7.08 trillion yuan, a decrease of 0.9% from the previous year. Among them, exports were 4.35 trillion yuan, an increase of 0.2% over the previous year; imports were 2.73 trillion yuan, a decrease of 2.6 from the previous year. %.
From the perspective of foreign trade structure, the foreign trade export industry is clearly differentiated.
First, Guangdong's exports of household appliances, electrical equipment, automatic data processing equipment and their parts and components have maintained rapid growth; second, exports of epidemic prevention materials such as medical instruments and equipment, medical materials and medicines, masks and protective clothing have grown rapidly.
Guangdong’s total export of anti-epidemic materials reached 227.88 billion yuan, an increase of 81.7%.
Among them, the export of medical equipment and equipment increased by 41.5%, the growth of medical materials and medicines by 35.8%, and the growth rate of textiles including masks doubled.
This has largely supported the stability of Guangdong's foreign trade without a sharp decline.
The distribution of Guangdong's foreign trade partners has undergone major changes. Markets such as ASEAN and the United States have grown rapidly, while markets such as South Korea and Japan have declined rapidly.
In terms of scale, ASEAN replaced Hong Kong, China and became Guangdong's largest trading partner; the United States surpassed the European Union and became Guangdong's third largest trading partner.
From the perspective of trade methods and formats, the dominant position of general trade is gradually strengthening; the import and export of processing trade show negative growth at the same time, and its position continues to weaken; the trade of cross-border e-commerce and market procurement has grown against the trend.
The report believes that with the gradual implementation of the development plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Pearl River Delta region will further reform and open up, and the trade rules of the “three customs areas” will continue to innovate under the promotion of trade liberalization.
