Rail travelers across Germany have to be prepared for train cancellations and delays.

The train drivers' union GDL started its strike in passenger transport early on Wednesday morning.

Local and long-distance trains have been on strike nationwide since 2 a.m.

In the morning, this should primarily affect commuters on their way to work, as S-Bahn trains are also operated by Deutsche Bahn.

Many holidaymakers also have to expect delays and train cancellations in the middle of the holiday season.

According to the railway, only a quarter of the IC and ICE will run.

Postpone journeys if possible

The railway responded to the strike call with a replacement timetable and asked travelers to postpone journeys that were not urgently needed.

In local transport, the railway has created a "minimum timetable".

FAZ.NET has put together important information for travelers whose train is canceled.

The strike lasts until Friday night

The GDL had already started the labor dispute on Tuesday evening in freight transport.

According to a railway spokesman, the first trains had to stop there.

The strike should last until Friday morning at 2 a.m.

After the failed collective bargaining, the GDL wants to emphasize its demands with the labor dispute.

She described the last offer submitted by Deutsche Bahn as "non-negotiable".

In a strike vote, 95 percent voted for the strike.
