China's domestic market was the largest in the world for the first time in 2020.
According to the international aviation industry association IATA, this was due to the rapid recovery of domestic air traffic in that country after initially strict measures to control the corona virus.
The reductions in passenger numbers were the lowest worldwide last year in the continents of Asia and Oceania combined at 53 percent for the full year.
A total of 781 million passengers boarded an aircraft in that region.
In Europe this was 390 million, a decrease of 67 percent compared to a year earlier.
Globally, the contraction was 60 percent, bringing the total number of passengers to 1.8 billion.
With China Southern Airlines and China Airlines, the Asian country also supplied two of the five largest airlines in the world.
The top also consisted of the American airlines American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.
