TASS reports.

"We ... note with regret the recent decision of the United States and Germany on Nord Stream 2 ... We regard Nord Stream 2 as a geopolitical project aimed at expanding Russia's influence in Europe by dominating the energy market." said in a joint statement from lawmakers.

They believe that the completion of the construction of the project poses a threat to the national security of a number of EU member states and the United States and will weaken Ukraine.

Politicians have called on NATO to strengthen its containment of Russia, focusing on the eastern flank from the Baltic to the Black Sea, and to strengthen sanctions against Moscow.

The statement was signed by the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee of the US Congress, as well as his colleagues from the parliaments of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, Great Britain and Ireland.

US President Joe Biden previously admitted that the construction of the pipeline is nearing completion and the imposition of sanctions against the project would be counterproductive for relations with Europe.

In late July, US Undersecretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland announced that the United States had reached an agreement with Germany on Nord Stream 2.
