In July, the number of new cars sold in Japan was more than 370,000, which was about 4% lower than the same month last year.

In addition to the global shortage of semiconductors, the infection of the new coronavirus spread rapidly in Southeast Asia, and factories that could not procure parts were shut down, affecting the supply of cars.

According to the announcement by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and others, the number of new cars sold in Japan in July was 377,448 units, a decrease of 4.7% from the same month last year.

Of these, the number of ordinary passenger cars, trucks and buses was 247,148, an increase of 3.2% from the same month last year, while the number of light vehicles was 130,300, a decrease of 17%.

In addition to the global shortage of semiconductors, the infection of the new coronavirus spread rapidly in Southeast Asia, and operations were temporarily suspended at factories where parts could not be procured, affecting the supply of cars.

Last July, due to the spread of the infection, it decreased by more than 13% from the previous year, but last month it was even lower than that, and there are concerns that the impact will be prolonged.

According to an industry group, "procurement of various parts, not just semiconductors, has begun to stagnate. It is difficult to read when the infection will subside, and we are not in a situation where we can make a future outlook."
