<Reporter> At

a large supermarket in Seoul, consumers are worried about whether or not they put it on after checking the recent sharp rise in vegetable prices.

[Consumer: Spinach is eaten by children, but it has risen a lot these days. Almost between 1,000 won and 2,000 won, it has risen a lot.]

The surge in vegetable prices in the summer is due to the heat wave.

In particular, the price of leafy vegetables, which are weak in strong sunlight, jumped significantly.

The wholesale price of green lettuce soared 62% compared to the normal year, and the price of spinach also jumped 92% from the normal year as shipments decreased, double the level of last year.

The same goes for radish, cabbage, and sesame leaves.

[Park Ho-sun / Guro-gu, Seoul: I think it is too expensive. one 80%? I think it went up by 70-80%. It's very burdensome, huh? Even if you buy something fresh, it goes bad quickly. It's summer, so the leaves melt.]

While the supply of vegetables is running, the demand has rather increased, fueling the price increase.

As the distance strengthened due to the spread of COVID-19 continues, the demand for home-cooked agricultural products has been maintained steadily, and as the consumption of pork and beef increases during the holiday season, the consumption of leafy vegetables to enjoy together has also increased.

However, the price of Chinese cabbage, which skyrocketed due to the rainy season last year, and green onion, which was called gold green at the beginning of the year, fell in price.

As the sweltering heat is expected to continue next month, the price of leafy vegetables is expected to continue rising for the time being.

The government is pursuing measures to stabilize supply and demand, such as utilizing the stockpiled amount.
