The Chinese provider Xiaomi has taken the place of its competitor Huawei, which has been hit by American sanctions, in the global smartphone market.

According to calculations by the analysis company Canalys, Xiaomi moved up to second place in the industry in terms of device sales in the second quarter and came close to the market leader Samsung.

Xiaomi increased its sales by 83 percent within a year and achieved a market share of 17 percent.

Samsung came to 19 percent.

Apple with its iPhone followed in third place with 14 percent, as Canalys reported on Friday night.

Huawei was the second largest smartphone provider until last year and was about to jump to the top.

But after sanctions by the US government, the Chinese network equipment and electronics company lost access to various Western technologies.

It was particularly painful for the international smartphone business that Huawei has not been able to bring any new phones with Google services onto the market since then.

Therefore, Huawei had to set up its own app platform, among other things.

Huawei fell out of the global list of leading smartphone providers, even if the group still plays an important role in China.

The top 5 are completed by the Chinese providers Oppo and Vivo, each with around ten percent market share.
