The Innovation Center at the Dubai Customs Department was able to transform challenges into achievements and innovations. The Department ranked first in the Middle East as the "most innovative institution", according to the Global Innovation Institute report on the Middle East for the year 2021.

Hussain Al Fardan, Director of the Innovation Center at Dubai Customs, said that the center is an extension of the department's suggestions and complaints department, which has turned into an innovation center established in 2020, where the complaints and suggestions department was separated from human resources and granted complete independence, in a bold move. He added that the Innovation Center entity began to appear since 2000 through the complaints and suggestions section, and it was developed several times until it reached this stage.

Regarding the awards and the number of patents obtained by the department, Al-Fardan explained that the department has reached more than 100 patents from copyright to inventions and innovations, while it has won 130 prizes in the field of creativity and innovation, most of which came out of the Innovation Center, noting that all of these innovations contributed to Developing services, increasing revenues, and raising staff efficiency.

He stated that most of the innovations in the department emerged from real challenges, which turned into opportunities that served the customs work in the department, employees, customers and partners, which reflected the success of the open innovation system that has been used in the Emirate of Dubai since 2010, as it allowed everyone to deal with any challenge in any party, and to develop it , whether with a simple or medium idea or even a qualitative invention.

Al-Fardan indicated that during the pandemic, the center faced 70 challenges in the administrations, from which it came out with 266 ideas, and resulted in 10 qualitative innovations, three of which won international awards from the American Ideas Association, which is the “safe passage” for sterilization at a time when the world relied only on sterilization gates, And the “transparent barrier” for inspecting travelers’ bags without touching while maintaining distance, in addition to the “e-commerce platform” that contributed to making 100% of customs work electronically.
