The
Covid
crisis
raised Spanish poverty to its highest levels since the 2008 economic recession. Thus, in 2020,
21%
of the population residing in our country was below the risk of poverty threshold, which increased almost one percentage point compared to the previous year.
The data are the
Survey of living conditions
referring to 2020, which has been published this Thursday by the
National Institute of Statistics
.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the percentage of the population in a
situation of severe material deprivation
has skyrocketed by
7%
, reaching the levels of 2014, in the midst of the economic crisis, compared to 3.4% in the previous year. Which translates into the difficulty of keeping the house at a suitable temperature, going on vacation or making ends meet. In this sense, 10% of Spaniards had serious problems making ends meet. These are some of the concepts that determine the rate of
risk of poverty or social exclusion
. The latter also experienced an increase of 1.1% compared to 2019, reaching
26.4%.
By age group, those most affected by the economic ravages of the coronavirus were those
over 65
, among whom the poverty rate increased by 4.3%, although this increase occurred in all age groups.
