The Federal Network Agency has decided which other power plants will be shut down in return for compensation as part of the coal phase-out.

In the third auction of the prizes, a total of eleven power plants were accepted.

Compensation of around 219 million euros was allocated.

The Bergkamen A power plant block of the Essen-based electricity producer Steag was used as the largest system with an output of 717 megawatts.

Larger power plants in Bremen, on the Saar as well as in Gelsenkirchen and Marl are also going offline.

In addition, smaller systems were also awarded a contract.

The power plants are no longer allowed to burn coal from October 31, 2022.

The transmission system operators and the Federal Network Agency are still examining whether they need to remain in reserve to secure the power grid in critical situations.

In the third round of tenders, the demand was for the first time lower than the volume offered by the network agency.

As of December 31, 2022, only a maximum of 15,000 megawatts of hard coal and lignite small-scale plants in Germany are expected to generate electricity.

This goal will be achieved, emphasized the Federal Network Agency.

"The coal phase-out is progressing steadily," said the President of the Federal Network Agency, Jochen Homann.

In the first three tendering rounds, power plants with a total output of around 8,400 megawatts were awarded the contract.

A total of eight auctions are planned.
