This could attract the attention of Emmanuel Macron, who is considering relaunching the pension reform, but after 2022 (if he is therefore re-elected).
According to an Odoxa poll carried out for BFM Business, Challenges and Aviva, the French would be more in favor of taxing large fortunes rather than increasing the retirement age to pay off the Covid debt.
66% of French people favor an increase in taxes for the richest
The survey *, unveiled by BFM-TV, proposed three avenues for improving public accounts.
At the top of the podium, 66% of the French would choose to tax the great fortunes.
Then, 38% of them would vote for a reduction in the number of civil servants.
And with only 19% of the votes, the third solution would be “pension reform, notably by increasing the legal retirement age”.
Create a new wealth tax
In detail, 38% of respondents imagine the creation of a new wealth tax more extensive than the current Real Estate Wealth Tax (IFI), heir to the ISF. Which had been deleted in the first year of Emmanuel Macron's mandate. Only 15% of French people prefer to increase inheritance tax on the inheritance of the largest estates. Recall that the report by Jean Tirole and Olivier Blanchard, submitted to Emmanuel Macron at the end of June, notably proposed an overhaul of inheritance taxes.
An interesting question, Odoxa asked what was the definition of "great fortunes" for these French respondents.
For almost half of them (43%), the threshold would be set at 600,000 euros of wealth, for 29% it would start at 1.3 million euros (limit today for paying wealth tax real estate), for 18% it is from 4 million euros and finally for 10%, we would limit ourselves to billionaires.
Interesting results ten months before the presidential election, as the parties begin to consider their program.
