• Controversy Alberto Garzón enrages the livestock sector by inciting to eat less meat to protect the planet

The Minister of Consumption, Alberto Garzón, defended this Wednesday from his department prioritizing

"public health and environmental awareness"

with the recommendation to reduce the consumption of meat and has indicated that this matter is above "another series of legitimate demands "As, as he has said, the" business profits "of the meat sector.

This is how the minister has pronounced himself in an interview in Cadena Ser, collected by Europa Press, after the professional meat associations of Spain expressed their

"amazement"

at the message published on social networks by Garzón in which he recommended reducing meat consumption because "it harms health and the planet."

In this context, he pointed out that it is "a legitimate response" that his department was already waiting for, but that the objective is to

aspire to "change consumption habits to direct them towards a scenario" with "healthier and more sustainable" diets

. "This implies modifying market demand and affects supply," said Garzón, who stressed that "this reality" does not appeal to companies.

The head of Consumption has explained that he will prioritize "public health and environmental awareness" following the recommendations of science for decades and also the indications of the European Commission.

"We are risking life itself,"

said the minister, while pointing out that there is "a displacement of the Mediterranean diet" based on vegetables and fresh foods "for pastries and red meat in excess."

"That is producing important effects," stressed Garzón, who has asked to correct it and put it above "another series of legitimate claims" such as business profits.

"It is not about stopping eating meat, but about doing it in a moderate way," he said.

In this context, he has argued that his Ministry has to "contribute" to change consumption habits towards other "more sustainable" and "inform" consumers about the effects generated by excessive consumption of meat.

For this reason, he has also asked to consume meat from

"extensive, family and ecological livestock" as opposed to "macro-farms"

that produce "an environmental deterioration" and have an impact on few jobs.
