Iran has a new president elected since last month, Ebrahim Raïssi, who will take office in a few weeks.

Until then, this ultra-conservative held the post of head of the Judicial Authority, a key post in the Islamic Republic for which the successor of Ebrahim Raïssi has just been appointed.

His name is Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejeï and he has a lot in common with Iranian President-elect Ebrahim Raïssi: both are Shiite clerics, both have climbed the ranks of the judiciary.

In Iran, the Judicial Authority does not report to the President, but to the Supreme Leader, the main leader of the country.

It is therefore Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who announced that he had appointed Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejeï, who in recent years was the n ° 2 of the judiciary.

While thanking Mr. Raisi for his valuable services, I appoint Mr. Mohseni Eje'i Head of the Judiciary Branch.

I expect him to work diligently to administer justice, safeguard liberties, prevent crimes, combat corruption, and be in contact with the people and present among them.

The Iranians know him, he was a judge during the resounding corruption trial of a former mayor of Tehran at the end of the 1990s. He was then seen as intelligence minister under the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and it is for this when he would have participated in the violent repression of the

demonstrations of 2009

, which earned him today to appear on the American and European lists of Iranian personalities targeted by sanctions, for "

violations of human rights

 ".
