Last year, Germany's population did not grow for the first time since 2011.

As the Federal Statistical Office announced on Monday in Wiesbaden, the number of people remained at 83.2 million.

In exact numbers, a slight decrease of 12,000 inhabitants was registered.

There had been an increase in each of the previous years.

According to the authority, one reason for the largely unchanged total number is a decrease in net immigration, which fell year-on-year from 294,000 in 2019 to 209,000 in 2020.

The excess of deaths over the number of births rose at the same time from 161,000 to 212,000.

The proportion of older people is growing

However, there were shifts in the composition of the population.

According to the Federal Office, the number of very old people aged 80 and over rose by 4.5 percent year-on-year to 5.9 million, despite an increased mortality rate due to the corona pandemic.

In the age group between 60 and 79 years, the increase was 0.5 percent to 18.2 million.

In the group between 20 and 59 years, there was a slight decrease of 0.4 percent to 43.7 million people. The number of children and adolescents remained largely unchanged at 15.3 million. The average age rose by 0.1 to 44.6 years.
