• The Paris city hall will increase the price of street parking from August 2021.

  • Paris is not the most expensive European capital from this point of view, but is in the top three.

  • Paid motorcycle parking, which will come into effect in 2022, is also still rarely practiced.

The Paris town hall has just given a big boost to parking prices.

From August 1, 2021, non-resident motorists will have to pay 6 euros per hour to park in the hyper-center (+ 2 euros compared to the current price), and 4 euros in the peripheral districts (+ 1, 6 euro).

In 2022, motorized two-wheelers (excluding electric) will also have to go to the cash register, and pay between 2 and 3 euros per hour, while they have paid nothing until now.

Unsurprisingly, the right-wing opposition denounced a desire to "remove the car" and a "form of toll" imposed on drivers.

Beyond this local debate,

wanted to compare the future parking prices planned in Paris with those charged in other European capitals.

Paris in the top three

From the motorist's point of view, Paris is not the European capital which practices the highest prices (see graph below), according to data collected * by

.

It is nevertheless in the top three in Western Europe with London and Amsterdam.

The British capital is also distinguished by its congestion charge (13 euros per day) for vehicles wishing to circulate in the hypercentre.

The only consolation is that the first hour of parking is free, unlike in Paris.

Regarding pricing for two-wheelers (motorcycles and scooters), most European capitals are free.

Only certain districts of London are paying, at a very modest price: less than 5 euro cents per hour.

From this point of view, Paris is for the moment an exception.

Even if in France, Vincennes and Charenton have been charging bikers since 2018.
