Musk: Tesla can accept Bitcoin in this case

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the company will only accept Bitcoin again if minting cryptocurrency relies heavily on using clean energy sources to reduce environmental damage.

In a tweet on Sunday, Musk stated that a roughly 50 percent clean energy use in bitcoin production would be an acceptable standard.

It is noteworthy that cryptocurrency miners consume huge amounts of energy in maintaining networks, storing data and processing complex operations in mining, which has drawn criticism from climate advocates.

Musk and Tesla have released several statements about Bitcoin in recent months that have caused the value of the currency to fluctuate.

The company initially announced that it has invested about $1.5 billion in bitcoin and will soon allow customers to pay with digital currency to buy Tesla cars.

Bitcoin was introduced as a payment option last March, but the decision was put on hold again less than two months later, with Musk citing Bitcoin's poor history of dealing with the environment.

Musk dismissed accusations that he was manipulating the price of bitcoin with frequent changes.

Musk said Tesla has sold about 10% of its bitcoin holdings to demonstrate that it can be disposed of without significantly changing the price of the cryptocurrency.
