Aeon, a major distributor, has decided to postpone the construction of a shopping center planned in Myanmar until around the summer of this year.

The effects of confusion such as the crackdown on civilians by the military are spreading to the businesses of Japanese companies.

Aeon is planning to open a shopping center in 2023 as a joint venture with a local company in the suburbs of Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar.

Until now, construction was scheduled to start around the summer of this year, but according to the people concerned, Aeon decided to postpone the construction.

The timing of the new construction is undecided, but it is said that it is not considering withdrawing from the business because it is expected to grow significantly in the future if the local situation calms down.

Following the February coup d'etat, Aeon had already returned two local expatriates involved in this project to Japan.

In Myanmar, social and economic turmoil continues due to the crackdown on citizens by the military, and the business of Japanese companies is beginning to be affected.
