The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and the Digital Government in the country revealed that it is currently possible to reach 6000 government services within minutes using the digital ID.

The authority stated, in a virtual seminar, organized yesterday, that Internet services were provided using satellites in remote and difficult-to-reach areas during the pandemic.

For its part, Etisalat confirmed that more than 90% of the UAE’s population is currently connected to the Internet, making the UAE the first in the Gulf to achieve this achievement.

In detail, the Acting Executive Director of Policies and Programs Department at the Communications Regulatory and Digital Government Authority, Muhammad Al-Khamis, said that Internet services were provided using satellites in remote and hard-to-reach areas during the pandemic.

On Thursday, during a symposium organized by the authority on accelerating digital transformation in difficult times on the occasion of the International Day of Communications and the Information Society, he revealed that approximately 6000 government services can be reached within minutes now by using the digital identity.

Bin Ghalita added that thanks to this readiness, the UAE has become one of the first countries to enter the recovery phase, indicating that the country is currently preparing for the big event represented by the Expo 2020 Dubai, which will start its activities next October with the participation of all countries.

Bin Ghalita called to attend the upcoming international exhibition to celebrate the actual return to normalcy dominated by economic prosperity and productive human interaction to create a brighter future.

In turn, the Executive Director of Spectrum Management and Technological Development at Etisalat, Abdul Hadi Mahmoud Abu Al-Mal, said that more than 90% of the UAE's population is currently connected to the Internet, supported by the use of modern technologies, on top of which is the fifth generation technology.

Abu Al-Mal pointed out that Etisalat has so far supported more than 19,000 students from families that do not have internet service during the pandemic, by providing them with Internet packages on mobile phones, to enable them to freely browse educational platforms and sites, and free access to applications and platforms that allow visual communication. Abu Al-Mal added that Etisalat has upgraded the capacity of the local network, implemented new fixed broadband stations inside and outside cities, as well as upgraded the fixed broadband network capacity to accommodate the increasing pressure, and implemented new stations for the mobile phone network while upgrading the mobile network to maintain the quality Communication and Internet services, and expanding the international network to maintain the quality of international incoming and outgoing communications to and from service providers around the world. He stated that “Etisalat” has doubled home support teams for the purposes of providing or improving services around the clock, as quickly as possible, maintaining all vital sites and transmission stations, and allocating permanent existing technical teams, stressing that digital transformation and access to digital platforms has become a priority and a major matter during the period. Because of the pandemic, it is no longer a luxury thing as it was before it.

For his part, Head of Network Engineering Transformation at Huawei Telecom, Imad Ahmed, considered that 90% of the UAE's population connected to the Internet is a great achievement, and is the first of its kind in the Gulf region.

He said that doing business, obtaining government services and digital shopping has become partially or completely dependent on electronic platforms.
